The Living Room is an award winning addiction recovery charity, founded by Janis Feely MBE. It runs two centres in Hertfordshire – one in Stevenage and one in St Albans.
Addiction is incredibly harmful to both individuals and families. It is often passed down the generations as a result of parents modelling addictive behaviours to their children who may also experience neglect or abuse. By supporting the whole family to recover together we break the generational cycle of addiction.
The services at each centre include:
Free intensive structured, abstinence-based, day treatment (running from Monday through to Friday) for adults (18+) with substance addictions (alcohol and illicit and non-illicit drugs) and behavioural addictions (e.g. eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, self-harm, gambling, shoplifting, relationships, love and sex).
Free, Ofsted registered, on-site crèche (Stevenage based – open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays) which enables parents to access treatment.
Free support and advocacy for parents with children on the ‘protection register’, including children in ‘looked after care’.
Free parenting support and workshops.
Free family and friends group therapy.

We achieve excellent outcomes for addicts and their family and friends
- Each year 60 to 70% (approximately 120 individuals) of all addicts engaged in our services achieve abstinence recovery.
- Each year approximately 60 family members and friends regain their quality of life.
- Over the last 15 years 46 children have been returned to their parents from ‘looked after care’ and many more have been removed from the Child Protection Register.
